The New UK

On the 1st of January 2021 the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement came into being, changing the relationship between Ireland and the UK. This agreement set out a number of changes. However, we can expect further changes and developments over the months and years ahead as the UK refines and adjusts its regulatory framework and enters into new free trade agreements. This will change how sectors operate leading to potential opportunities or new market conditions for Irish companies.

It is important also that Irish companies continue to look at other drivers of change in the UK like an accelerated response to climate changedigital disruptionchanges in demographics etc.

Why the UK?

The UK remains a highly attractive market for Irish exporters to start and scale based on its size, proximity, common language, business and legal systems, as well as the deeply integrated supply chains and networks.

The World Bank describes the UK as one of the most successful nations in terms of the application of the rule of law, control of corruption, government effectiveness, and regulatory quality, placing it number 8 on their ease of doing business rankings for 2020.

The relationship between Ireland and the UK is evolving but the UK will remain a vital strategic partner for Irish companies. The UK market presents many opportunities and is a leader and benchmark for other countries in sectors like Financial Services, Retail, Construction and Offshore Wind.

  • 2nd largest Aerospace industry in the world.
  • 3rd largest E-Commerce market in the world
